Virus alert for the worm W32/Small.KI

Norman's current risk rating is as of now upgraded from medium to high. The worm W32/Small KI@mm has been spreading massively since the middle of January. If you are infected and do not scan your computer with an updated antivirus program before February 3rd the worm will delete important files in your computer.

The main reason for this alert is the fact that the worm has a dangerous payload. Dangerous malware continues to exploit Windows vulnerability

Highly malicious code continue to spread through vulnerabilities in Windows system. The malware using this exploit, collectively named WMF/Exploit.B or W32/ Exploit.gen may infect your system through email, IM channels and web pages and can infect your computer without your knowledge. These trojans can install ad/spyware as well as backdoors and bots to remotely control your machine.

IntroductionThis Security Information attempts to focus on the security trends that could be observed during 2005, and will also briefly comment upon what can be expected in 2006.

Viruses, worms and other malware - overviewIn 2005 Norman issued only one alert about malicious programs:

W32/Sober.RIn addition two other programs were set as HIGH RISK, but no alerts were sent.

The previous year there was 12 alerts, while it was 14 in 2003.

This clearly shows that there has been a new trend in malicious programs that manifestated itself during 2005. More about this later.

Near doubled results for Norman

The data security company Norman increased total revenue by 14 per cent to NOK 231 million in 2005. The preliminary accounts show that the company's result almost doubled last year. Pre tax profit ended at NOK 34.7 million, compared to NOK 17.9 million in 2004.

Norman achieved an EBITDA of NOK 38.0 million last year, representing an EBITDA margin of 16 per cent. In 2004, the EBITDA was NOK 21.1 million, a margin of 10 per cent. Earnings per share for 2005 were NOK 2.22, compared to NOK 1.80 the previous year.
