Ontrack Eraser
Software based data erasure solution
As the recognized leader in data recovery, DBTRONIX applies that expertise to help you ensure the security of your most critical data.
Ontrack Eraser software is an easy-to-use, highly flexible data erasure tool that erases all traces of data stored on a working hard drives - ensuring that sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands. Ontrack Eraser software complies with US DoD standard 5220.22M, meaning that the data being erased is not recoverable.
Traditional tools only touch the surface, but Ontrack Eraser software enters the core and erases 100% of the information on your hard disk. Now it is finally safe to dispose of equipment without losing track of sensitive data.
Why is Ontrack data erasure software necessary?
- An organization’s most sensitive information and intellectual property are often stored on hard drives
- Sensitive information that falls into the wrong hands can lead to loss of business, property, or reputation or lead to civil and criminal liability
- Simply deleting data from a hard drive does not mean that the data is gone forever
- Regulatory requirements for data protection and customer privacy demand complete, well documented data removal
How does Ontrack Eraser help your organization securely remove electronic data?
- Completely removes all data on targeted storage devices using proven, customizable overwriting procedures
- Includes flexible reporting features to help you guarantee that all data have been erased and when
- Can be used in both Linux and Windows environments
- Runs over servers or on individual PCs
- Offers flexible licensing models, fast installation and simple configuration
Perhaps the best testament to Eraser’s ability to permanently remove data is that even the Data Recovery team cannot recover data that have been removed by Ontrack Eraser!

Predefined Erasure Method
The Predefined erasure methods are overwrites standards that perform on various levels and use different algorithms. These overwrite standards are:
- CESG, HMG Infosec Standard No.5, both baseline and enhanced level
This is overwrite standard erases devices using CESG Infosec Standard 6 Enhanced a algorithm which includes three overwrites and the logging of bad blocks. The CESG erase standard allows up to 50 bad blocks on a media. If bad blocks are detected during the erase process, the physical addresses of those blocks are written to the erase report. If more than 50 bad blocks are detected, the erase process is considered incomplete. - Peter Gutmann
In the overwrite standard, the write head passes over each sectors 35 times. - US DoD 5220.22-M
In the overwrite standard, the write head passes over each sector three times. The first pass I with zeros (ox00), the second pass is with 0xFF, and the third pass is with random characters. The final pass is to verity random characters by reading. - BSI S2.167 Secure deletion of data media
Physical erasure sufficient for medium-level protection can be achieved by overwriting the entire data medium or at least the used sectors with a certain pattern. Uniform patterns such as? 000? Should not be used for overwriting, but rather patterns such as 1(hexadecimal, corresponds to the bit sequence 1100001). The second pass should be complementary pattern (for example: 3E. corresponding to the bit sequence 00111110) so that if at all possible each bit has been changed once. The overwrite procedure should be repeated at least twice, or preferably three times, as this provides a better protective effect. - Verman CSI
In this overwrite standard, the write head passes over each sector seven times.
Licensing
DBTRONIX offer Ontrack Eraser with three kinds of license:
- License per Ontrack Eraser: This license is based on an erasure counter and the counter is decreased per device being erased.
- Time Limited: The license is time limited. It provides unlimited erasures within the time specified(12months, 24months and 36 months).
- Time Limited license per Erasure: This license is limited by time and an erasure counter. The license is based per erasure within a given time.
